HISTORY OF LAWRA
Lawra is a Community in the upper west Region of Ghana.
The people of Lura , known as the Kusielles for that matter, tracing their decent remotely from two brother princes from
Yendi. One of them migrated towards north-west to Kuntule in Tumu then to
Yiyiri in Nadowli and the other South-West to Nkoranza to Bone in Ivory Coast and back through Bache in Burkina Faso to Kusebl in Nadowli . The people of Lura are said to have migrated from Tureh in Burkina Faso along the Black Volta East-wards. Crossing the Black Volta they settled at Nodowli splitting camp afterwards. Some went east-wards under the leadership of Sokpar to WA. That is Sokpa –yire of today. Others went north-ward towards Daffiama.
The rest under the leadership of Dasor came west-ward to Babile.
Being warriors and hunters, Kontol later discovered the Lura (Lawra) land first settling at Yikpee and spreading till date. Lura (Lawra) takes its name from a creeping thorny plant called
“Lura” in dagaare. The land, it is said, was full of these plants hence the name, which means the land of “Lura”. Later the colonial masters, change the name Lura to Lawra for easy pronunciation and spelling. The present site which is the heart of the town now was called “Kusemwanzuu”
which means on top of a rock. Lura
(Lawra) town therefore is sited on top of the rock covering up to around the chief palace area. It was therefore difficult to undertake agricultural activities hence the conclusion by some that Lura (Lawra) is difficult or hard in addition to the fact that it was a spiritual strong hold of the devil. Thank God today Jesus is in control of His creation with the coming of Christianity. It is worthy of note that, the arrival of the Roman fathers was welcome by our ancestors and not rejected as some have it. Rather, as the District capital, the colonial masters will not accept any competing power and so will have the Roman fathers move on to Jirapa from where they started spreading being led on their way to Jirapa by Naa Jorbie Akodam Kabebon (Karbo) I, who according to the writing of those Roman fathers offered them much assistance. Naa Jorbie Akodam Kabebon (Karbo) l. He was the chief link between the colonial masters and all other people then. History has it that at the time Kontol and followers arrived in Lura; villages that already existed include Kuoli and Dikpe . Dipke is said to have moved from Kuoli to present day site. The original occupants were known to be Sissalas who fled on scenting the arrival of these unconquerable warriors.
